Brandon Smith, 31, was shot in the neck outside his grandmother Mary Smith’s Broadview, Illinois, residence on August 7, 2017, at about 1:22 a.m. Mary called 911 and Brandon briefly went into her house, then returned to the curb to await paramedics. Officers, including Village of Broadview Officer Eric Davis, arrived and questioned Brandon but did not provide medical aid or summon additional help. Mary, a certified nursing assistant, was prevented from leaving the house to assist and warned she could be arrested. Paramedics arrived about 2:00 a.m.; officers delayed their treatment, Brandon went into cardiac arrest, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead about 2:17 a.m.

That night WESTAF officers executed a search warrant at Mary’s home. Detective James Lazansky and others caused significant property damage while searching, seized $10,000 in cash, jewelry, prescription medication and phones, and confined occupants during the search. Brandon’s mother, Dormie Smith, was told she could not file a complaint at the Broadview Police Department. On August 7, 2019, Mary, Tavaris, and Dormie Smith filed a 21-count lawsuit alleging denial of medical care, unlawful seizure and civil-rights violations against multiple municipalities and officers. No arrests or suspect identifications have been reported.
