Darien Carter, 24, was killed on June 2, 2017, in the 500-block of East Eureka Street in Champaign, Illinois. Witnesses reported seeing Carter riding a bicycle around 6 p.m. when another individual riding a bicycle followed him and opened fire. Carter was found with multiple gunshot wounds, taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, and pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Investigators recovered multiple shell casings and reviewed surveillance footage of the shooting. Witness identification led to the arrest of 21-year-old Marquise Burnett in Urbana; he was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and a firearm enhancement. The case went to trial, where Burnett was convicted of first-degree murder and a jury found he personally discharged the firearm. He received a 55-year sentence, including a 25-year firearm enhancement; post-trial motions were denied. The community remembered Carter, known as Busta, at a Celebration of Life service at Salem Baptist Church in Champaign.
