Eric P. Cybak, 34, of Chicago, was found dead in a parking garage stairwell at the Westfield Old Orchard Mall in Skokie, Illinois, on May 20, 2017. A mall employee discovered him about 1:30 p.m., bleeding from his head and unconscious; emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s preliminary autopsy attributed his death to multiple gunshot wounds and ruled it a homicide.

Skokie police, with the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force, investigated and concluded the killing was not random and that there was no ongoing threat to mall patrons. Cybak had been living in the San Francisco Bay Area but was originally from Northbrook and, at the time, was out on bail facing charges in Texas after a May 5, 2017 traffic stop in Carson County where deputies found more than 50 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle. No arrests have been announced; investigators have reviewed mall security footage and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
