Daniel Rodriguez was 19 when he was shot dead on February 1, 2017, during a gunfight that took place inside a vehicle in the 500 block of Emerald Avenue in Chicago Heights, Illinois. Prosecutors say the meeting had been arranged as a marijuana sale. Troy Jefferson, 20, of Dolton, Illinois, reportedly climbed into the backseat with Rodriguez, announced a robbery and pulled a handgun; a chaotic exchange of gunfire followed after the two men in the front seat also produced weapons. Rodriguez was struck in the chest and died at St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields; another man suffered a leg wound.

Jefferson was arrested on February 4, 2017, after surviving witnesses identified him as the shooter and he was found hiding at a friend’s house. He was charged with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and three counts of attempted armed robbery; bail was set at $5 million. The Chicago Heights police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force investigated the case.
