Matthew Farrell, 29, of Urbana, Illinois, was shot once in the chest and killed on June 11, 2016, at the family home on Oregon Street. The shooter was his father, David Farrell. The shooting followed a heated argument between the two men that turned physical; witnesses said both had been drinking and that Matthew struck his father during the altercation.
Matthew, born August 3, 1986, was a local graphic designer who had recently launched his own business, Matthew Farrell Creative, and was known in the Champaign-Urbana community for his fitness and active lifestyle. His mother, Mary Ellen Farrell, had died of brain cancer about nine months earlier.
David Farrell, 67 at the time, admitted to the shooting and was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He pleaded guilty to that charge and received a ten-year sentence with the possibility of parole after five years.
Did anyone in the Urbana area know Matthew or the Farrell family and have memories to share?
