Gerald Robert Boyes, a 53-year-old white male, was fatally shot on April 16, 2016, in the parking lot of Topper’s Sports Bar in Antioch, Illinois. Deputies from Lake County and McHenry County attempted to arrest him around 12:30 a.m. while he was wanted for a parole violation in Florida and was a suspect in a double murder investigation in McCracken County, Kentucky. According to reports, Boyes brandished a handgun and all four deputies opened fire; a gun was recovered from his person.

The deputies were placed on administrative leave and the Lake County Major Crime Task Force took over the inquiry. Investigators reviewed security footage and awaited autopsy and toxicology results; they were also examining the distance between Boyes and the deputies when shots were fired. Boyes had a lengthy criminal record with multiple felony convictions across several states and was considered a fugitive at the time.

If anyone witnessed the shooting or was in the area of Topper’s Sports Bar that night, please share what was seen or any footage that might help clarify the circumstances.
