Jack Goodman, 46, of Clinton, Illinois, died on March 11, 2016, after an encounter with police. Goodman had called authorities saying he was suicidal and armed; when officers arrived they found him in front of his home carrying a large butcher knife and a club. Officers attempted de-escalation, but Goodman advanced on them with the knife and officers fired; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Illinois State Police and the DeWitt County Coroner’s Office investigated. The inquiry concluded Goodman had taken steps that would make non-lethal force ineffective and indicated he intended to provoke officers into shooting him. No arrests or charges were brought against the officers, whose actions were deemed justified given the reported threat.
Goodman was born June 8, 1969, in Sullivan, Indiana. He worked as an artist doing glass etching, custom bike painting, and tattooing, enjoyed fishing and motorcycle riding, and is survived by his wife Kerri Newman, his mother and stepfather Linda and Larry Goforth, and his children Justin Ditterline-Goodman, Miranda Buckley, and Kelsey Goodman.
