James Smith-Woodward, 31, died on December 9, 2015, in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, after an accidental shooting at a hotel. He was staying at the Hawthorn Suites in the 2800 block of Greens Point Parkway when he accidentally shot himself while cleaning his gun and was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He called for help but was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead at 1:20 p.m.
The Hoffman Estates Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled the death accidental after an autopsy confirmed the fatal gunshot wound to the abdomen. Investigators reported no signs of foul play, no suspects or arrests, and no indications of disputes that might suggest another explanation. The case was closed after authorities determined the shooting was unintentional.
Did anyone who knew James, or who stayed at that Hawthorn Suites around December 9, 2015, notice anything that could shed more light on his final hours?
