On October 25, 2015, 39-year-old Tyrone D. Smith was fatally shot in the MB National Bank parking lot across from the N’Zuri Nightclub in Dolton, Illinois, after a minor fender-bender escalated into a confrontation among several people. Witnesses described a commotion involving multiple individuals, some with braided or dreadlocked hairstyles. Smith was pronounced dead at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Hammond, Indiana, at 3:17 a.m.

Investigators identified a 24-year-old Tyrone Smith as the primary suspect; the two men shared a name but were not related. An arrest warrant for first-degree murder was issued on October 30, 2015, and the FBI offered up to a $10,000 reward. The suspect was apprehended in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood on October 5, 2017, and later charged with first-degree murder. The prosecution at trial in February 2020 relied on witness testimony and bank surveillance footage, and a key witness made an identification in court for the first time, raising questions about eyewitness reliability. A conviction for first-degree murder was returned on February 14, 2020; the defendant’s legal team filed a motion for a new trial while awaiting sentencing.
