James E. Hubbard, a 41-year-old African American man from Alton, Illinois, was shot to death on August 8, 2015, while standing in the 700 block of Oakwood Avenue about 2:00 a.m. Police found Hubbard deceased after a 911 call reporting the shooting. The death was ruled a homicide and the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was called in to assist.

The investigation grew into a multiagency effort involving over twenty-five investigators from twenty-one surrounding police agencies. Investigators followed more than one hundred leads, conducted numerous interviews, and Crimestoppers offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest. In August 2015, Aryion E. Sanders, a 17-year-old from the same block, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and accused of personally discharging the firearm that killed Hubbard; the case was prosecuted in the Third Judicial Circuit Court in Madison County.

What can readers who lived in the area in August 2015 recall about that night or about Hubbard’s movements on Oakwood Avenue?
