Nicholas G. Schapmire, a 66-year-old man from Ozark, Illinois, died after being shot on May 16, 2015. The bullet, fired from a .357 Magnum revolver, entered his right upper cheek and exited his right temple, producing a large acute subdural hematoma; he died the next day at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.
The shooter was his son, Dennis F. M. Schapmire, who was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery. At trial the court heard that Dennis had returned from checking on his horse, entered the house armed with the revolver and later said he believed he had removed the gun from his jacket before going inside. Dennis was found guilty and sentenced to 50 years, but the convictions and sentence were later reversed on appeal because the trial court did not give a jury instruction on involuntary manslaughter.
Nicholas was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during the Vietnam War and worked at the Dresden Nuclear Power Station; he belonged to the Blazing Star Masonic Lodge and the Church of God of Prophecy and enjoyed time with his grandchildren and watching The Waltons and JAG.
Does anyone have memories of Nicholas or information about the events that led up to the shooting?
