Devonte Turner was 20 when he was fatally shot on April 30, 2015, in a parking lot on the 1200 block of Fleetwood Drive in Elgin, Illinois. He was sitting in the passenger seat of a friend’s car when William Ingram fired seven rounds through the rear window, striking Turner twice. Turner was driven to a local hospital but died shortly after arrival.

Authorities treated the shooting as a case of mistaken identity; prosecutors said Ingram intentionally approached the car and fired believing Turner was someone else. Ingram was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, and a jury found him guilty. A mandatory sentencing enhancement applied, with sentencing set for November 15, 2019.

Turner’s family and the community spoke about the impact of gun violence and the loss they continue to feel. Does anyone have memories of Devonte or information about that parking lot the night of April 30, 2015?
