Kaylyn Whitaker, a 20-year-old white woman, was found dead from a gunshot wound on October 31, 2014, in Martinsville, Illinois. Her death was initially ruled a suicide after her boyfriend, Connor Scott, said she had shot herself, but forensic experts later raised doubts about that conclusion because of the bullet wound’s location. Ten months after her death the case was reclassified as a homicide, though no arrest followed immediately and Scott, who had been at the scene, was not charged at that time.

Family frustration with the investigation mounted over the years; Kaylyn’s father publicly criticized the lack of progress in December 2018. In February 2019 Connor Scott unexpectedly confessed to the killing at a police station in Danville, Indiana and was charged with her murder and extradited to Illinois. He initially pleaded not guilty but later accepted a plea deal in October 2019 and received a 37-year prison sentence. Kaylyn’s family said the outcome brought some closure.

Did anyone in Martinsville or the surrounding area have contact with Kaylyn in the days before October 31, 2014, who might add context to what happened?
