On October 28, 2014, 25-year-old Joshua Custer was shot near the Jon DeShields Housing Projects in East St. Louis, Illinois. After gunfire, he attempted to flee but was later found dead in an adjacent field.

Joshua had been linked to an earlier 2007 shooting for which charges were dismissed in 2009; beyond that, the account emphasizes his life and the loss felt by his family and community. The Illinois State Police and the East St. Louis Police Department are seeking information.
