Sixteen-year-old Nathaniel Burns Jr., an African American male from Sauk Village, Illinois, was killed in a mass shooting on August 14, 2014. The shooting happened about 1:45 p.m. in the parking lot of a strip mall in the 1700 block of Sauk Trail; Nathaniel was pronounced dead at 2:52 p.m. at Franciscan St. Margaret Medical Center in Dyer, Indiana. Three other people in their late teens and early 20s were wounded—two with minor injuries found at the scene and a fourth taken to hospital by a friend.

Police say the violence began as an altercation between two groups of young men, during which an individual produced a handgun and fired several dozen rounds. Investigators identified a 2000 black 4-door Pontiac with Illinois plate V128344 as a vehicle of interest, believed to have been driven by a woman with a male passenger, and say the shooting was captured on camera.
