Malcolm Franklin, 22, was fatally shot on August 9, 2014, in Harvey, Illinois, after an earlier shooting at D&J’s Nite Spot in Middletown. Franklin claimed he acted in self-defense after being threatened; prosecutors said he fired with absolute callousness and disregard for human life because he knew several people were present.
Franklin was charged with murder, three counts of felonious assault, and tampering with evidence. A jury found him guilty after four hours of deliberation. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years. Families on both sides gave emotional testimony at sentencing.
