Jevante Johnson, 20, was killed on July 25, 2014, in Calumet City, Illinois, during a botched drug deal in the 300 block of 157th Street. Johnson, who performed as rapper Vonno, took part in what was described as a stick-up crew arranging to sell $275 worth of drugs. He entered the buyers’ vehicle and announced a holdup; one occupant then produced a handgun and shot Johnson several times. He was pronounced dead that night at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and an autopsy ruled the cause of death multiple gunshot wounds; the death was ruled a homicide.
Two men from Johnson’s crew, Jamal Hoare, 22, and Jacob Wilson, 19, were charged with first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery and held on $1.5 million bond based on their roles in the criminal episode. The shooter has not been apprehended, and another person involved was wounded but survived. Johnson had posted about the risks of the lifestyle he rapped about, including the possibility of dying while robbing drug dealers.
If anyone has information about who shot Johnson or the events that night, contact investigators.
