Eugene Lopez Coleman was 20 when he was found fatally shot in East St. Louis, Illinois, on July 23, 2014. Born March 3, 1994, in Springfield, Illinois, he attended high school in Cahokia and was the son of Evie and Ronald Smiley. The shooting was described as a violent crime that deeply affected his community.
The East St. Louis Police Department opened an investigation and questioned several people, pursued multiple leads and looked for links to other criminal activity. Investigators faced obstacles, including few witnesses willing to come forward, and details about suspects and motive remained unclear for an extended period. Eugene’s family took part in vigils and community efforts to keep his memory alive and press for answers.
Does anyone who knew Eugene or was in East St. Louis that night have information that could help the investigation?
