Charles A. Brown IV, a 20-year-old African American man, was fatally shot by Harvey, Illinois, police officers on April 13, 2014, after officers responding to an armed robbery at a Motel 6 encountered him in a vehicle. Police reports say Brown attempted to run over officers and they fired in self-defense; he was pronounced dead at Advocate South Suburban Hospital shortly after.

Brown’s family filed a federal lawsuit, Evison-Brown v. The City of Harvey et al., alleging wrongful death and civil rights violations, claiming excessive force and that the department failed to provide timely, accurate information, including 911 call recordings and dispatch logs.

The case raised contentious questions about transparency and police conduct in Harvey. If anyone has direct information about the Motel 6 incident, the encounter in the vehicle, or related recordings, please share what is known.
