On February 26, 2014, five-year-old Matthew Meier of Oak Lawn, Illinois, was killed at his grandparents’ home during an attack that left four family members dead. Authorities say John Conta Jr., 36, took a shotgun from his father’s locked hunting locker early that morning and then shot and killed his parents, John Conta Sr., in his 60s, and Janice Conta, 68, and his nephew Matthew. A fire was set in the basement with an accelerant, and the roof later collapsed; Matthew’s body was found in the basement.

Emergency crews were called about 5 a.m., and firefighters reported frozen hydrants and slippery conditions that slowed suppression, with the fire being struck about four hours after it began. Investigators with the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force described no known motive. Relatives said John Jr.’s personality had changed after spending a year in Russia working as a potato farmer, though no history of mental illness was reported.

If anyone knew Matthew or the Conta family, or has information about that night, please share what you remember.
