Darrin Hayes II, a 25-year-old African American man, was shot to death on February 10, 2014, inside his Belleville, Illinois apartment on Gateway Industrial Drive. He was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the hospital. At the time of the shooting his two young children were present: a 2-year-old daughter and a 2-month-old son.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, arrested four people in connection with the killing. Anthony Pierre Allen, 22, Amanda Marie Kent, 26, and Thomas D. Flakes, 19, were charged with first-degree murder; Brittney Y. Moore, 24, was charged with obstructing justice. Reported bond amounts were $1,000,000 each for Allen and Kent, $500,000 for Flakes, and $250,000 for Moore. Family members described the death as devastating and said Hayes did not deserve such a fate.
