Hussein Saghir, a 36-year-old Lebanese immigrant, was shot and killed on January 19, 2014, outside Sam’s Tobacco and Food Mart in Bensenville, Illinois. He and his brother were closing the store around 6 p.m. when surveillance footage shows two males confronting them in an attempted armed robbery. One of the assailants produced a handgun and shot Saghir; he was taken to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators identified three men in connection with the attack. Kenneth Bardlett, 24, of Bellwood initially pleaded guilty to aggravated battery with a firearm and agreed to testify, but the plea was later withdrawn when he provided false testimony and first-degree murder charges were reinstated; he was sentenced to 22 years. Tremayne Davis, 27, pleaded guilty to attempted armed robbery with a firearm and received an eight-year sentence. Stephan Russell, 25, was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted armed robbery with a firearm; evidence at trial showed Davis stayed in the car while Bardlett and Russell confronted the brothers.
The Bensenville Police Department, the Major Crimes Task Force, and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office handled the investigation. Saghir’s family and the local community remember him as a kind, helpful person. If anyone has information about that night or knew Hussein, please come forward.
