Seventeen-year-old Caleb Alexander Witty was shot and killed after leaving the Decatur Celebration with his 14-year-old sister late on August 4, 2011. The siblings were on the 2200 block of East Johns Avenue when two people confronted them and demanded money. Caleb stepped between the assailants and his sister, and gunfire struck him in the arm and chest. He was pronounced dead just after midnight on August 5, 2011.

In the days after the killing, police appealed for information and Crime Stoppers publicized the case. Family, friends, and classmates placed obituaries and remembrances while investigators pursued leads that eventually grew quiet; the circumstances reported then — two attackers, a robbery demand, and a brother shielding his sister — remained central to the investigation.

If anyone has information about that night on East Johns Avenue or remembers seeing anything unusual near the Decatur Celebration on August 4, 2011, contact the Decatur police.
