Derrick A. Bell, 19, was shot in the back and killed on February 25, 2011, in Chicago Heights, Illinois, following an altercation over a reportedly stolen flat-screen television taken from a basement apartment on Sangamon Street. Paramedics attempted to save him but he died at the scene; the Cook County Medical Examiner listed the cause as a gunshot wound to the back and his mother identified the body.
Authorities arrested multiple suspects in connection with the shooting. Pablo Peña, 21, and his younger brother Giovanni Peña, 18, were charged with first-degree murder, along with a 16-year-old identified as Michael Martin of Glenwood. The dispute over the stolen TV escalated into a violent encounter that ended in Derrick’s death. Derrick left behind a young son.
The Bell family had already suffered other recent losses, including the death of cousin Jerel Bell from multiple gunshot wounds to the head and a separate murder charge involving cousin Jeffery Bell. Does anyone in the Chicago Heights area have information about the confrontation on Sangamon Street or the events that led up to that night?
