Jeffrey J. Weides, a 38-year-old bartender from Elgin, Illinois, was killed on April 14, 2001, during a mass shooting at JB’s Pub. The shooter, 43-year-old Luther Casteel, had been ejected from the bar earlier for causing disturbances and returned armed with four guns and more than 200 rounds of ammunition. Casteel’s rampage also killed another patron, Richard Bartlett, 48, and wounded multiple others before patrons subdued him and police arrested him.

Casteel was charged with the murders of Weides and Bartlett and with numerous counts of attempted murder for the injured patrons. At trial his defense argued intoxication as a mitigating factor; the court rejected that argument. The judge sentenced Casteel to death by lethal injection and imposed a life term for 15 counts of attempted murder.

Does anyone have memories of JB’s Pub that night or information that could shed more light on what happened?
