On April 14, 2001, Richard Bartlett, 48, was killed in a mass shooting at JB’s Pub in Elgin, Illinois. The gunman, Luther Luke Casteel, had been ejected earlier for harassing female patrons and returned armed; his attack also killed 38-year-old bartender Jeffrey Weides and injured 21 others. Patrons and employees subdued Casteel at the scene.
Casteel, described in reports as a divorced construction worker with a history of violent behavior and an interest in military paraphernalia, faced a long list of charges including first-degree murder, attempted murder and weapons offenses. He had a prior armed robbery conviction from 1977 for which he served 13 years. During his trial he showed little remorse and was convicted on most counts; a death sentence was imposed in 2002 and later changed in 2003.
Does anyone have memories of JB’s Pub that night or information about Richard Bartlett that could add to the record?
