Sergeant Gregory Martin Sears, 50, was shot and killed on June 1, 2000, while on routine patrol in an industrial area near U.S. Route 20 and Interstate 90. A witness heard several shots and found his body about 20 feet from his cruiser; he was wearing a bullet-resistant vest but did not survive the attack.
A suspect was arrested the day after the killing, but John Carroccia was acquitted on March 26, 2002. The jury concluded the prosecution relied largely on circumstantial evidence and that investigators had not produced physical evidence conclusively linking Carroccia to the murder, with no definitive blood or gunpowder residue tying him to the scene. The case has not been reopened and the shooter has not been identified.
Sears had served seven years with the Hampshire Police Department and was survived by his wife and parents. Does anyone have information about that night or the investigation that could help bring closure to the family?
