Stanley R. Pijanowski III, 52, was killed March 11, 1997, during a shooting at the Comerica bank branch in Detroit, Illinois. He was branch manager and assistant vice president and one of three people shot when 21-year-old Allen Lane Griffin Jr. entered the bank, announced a holdup, and opened fire. Assistant manager Lisa Griffin and a customer, James Isom, were also shot; police shot Griffin at the scene after he killed an elderly customer.

Reports say Griffin forced about ten people in the bank to lie on the floor and recite the Lord’s Prayer before the shooting. Investigators noted Griffin had been dealing with family troubles, a recent death in the family, a child-custody dispute, and was wanted for violating probation from a drug conviction. Pijanowski had previously expressed concerns about safety at the branch following several robberies but continued working there and was remembered by his mother, Florence, as compassionate and responsible.

The shooting ended with Griffin’s death at the scene and no other arrests reported. Does anyone have memories of Pijanowski, the Comerica branch, or the day’s events that could add detail?
