Susan Kay Munson Gilmore was 52 and from Rockford, Illinois. She was on vacation and working as a home-economics teacher when she was shot and killed on June 19, 1995, in McLean, Illinois. She was sitting in her car at a gas station in McLean County when the shooter, identified as Ernest Jamison, shot her, dragged her from the vehicle, and drove off in it.
McLean County deputies later spotted the stolen car and pursued it. During the chase, Jamison attempted to take his own life and blinded himself; he was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Jamison pleaded guilty to Gilmore’s murder and was sentenced to death; his sentence survived appeals.
Does anyone have memories of Sue Gilmore, her teaching, or the Rockford community’s response to her death?
