George Garcia was 60 when he was shot and killed outside his condominium in Bensenville, Illinois, on July 23, 1991. The shooting happened while he sat in his pickup truck; the person who fired the fatal shot was his wife, Guinevere Garcia, then 33, during an attempted robbery carried out with an accomplice identified as John Gonzales.

Gonzales was later sentenced to 7 years for his role in the attempted armed robbery. Guinevere Garcia was convicted of first-degree murder. Her defense at trial presented chronic depression and borderline personality disorder as mitigating factors, but the court found her legally responsible and imposed the death penalty. That sentence was later commuted to life in prison by Governor Jim Edgar.
