Nicholas Brent Nicky Nick Corwin was an eight-year-old student at Hubbard Woods Elementary School when he was fatally shot on May 20, 1988, in Winnetka, Illinois. Laurie Dann entered the school that day and opened fire; Nicky was killed and several other students were injured. After the school shootings, Dann took a family hostage, set their house on fire, and later died by suicide.
Earlier the same day Dann had attempted to poison several acquaintances and set fires at a school and a daycare center. Reports say she had a history of mental health problems and had shown increasingly erratic behavior in the period leading up to the attacks. The community reaction included a handgun ban in Winnetka enacted shortly after the tragedy. A Winnetka soccer field and playground have been named for Nicky, his funeral was attended by 1,500 people, and friends and schoolmates produced a book titled The Gifts that Nicholas Gave.
