Anastasios S. Thomas Pavlopoulous, a 27-year-old of Greek descent, was killed on February 10, 1980, during a robbery at the Empire Jewelry Store in Berwyn, Illinois.

Walter Stewart was apprehended by Berwyn police as he fled with stolen jewelry and was charged with the murders of Pavlopoulous and Rodica, the attempted murder of Manzano, and armed robbery. Stewart pleaded guilty in July 1980; he waived a jury trial and received a death sentence for the murders plus two concurrent 30-year terms for attempted murder and armed robbery. Appeals to overturn the conviction were denied and the Illinois Supreme Court upheld the death sentence.
