Sergeant Harry E. White II, 30, was a Waukegan, Illinois police officer killed on November 13, 1977, after responding to a report that a man who had murdered his wife was seen in a tavern in Winthrop Harbor. According to reports, Sergeant White attempted to arrest the suspect, who produced a handgun and shot the officer, killing him instantly. White had six years with the Waukegan Police Department and was survived by his wife and two sons.

The suspect was later convicted of murder and initially sentenced to death; that sentence was later commuted to life in prison, and the convict died in July 1990. Officers from neighboring departments attended Sergeant White’s funeral and the killing had a profound effect on the community and his fellow officers.

If anyone knew Sergeant White or was in the area that night, any memory of the events in Winthrop Harbor could help preserve the full story of his service and sacrifice?
