Salvatore Sam Giancana, born Gilormo Giancana on May 24, 1908 in Chicago, was shot to death on June 19, 1975 at his Oak Park, Illinois home. He was 67 and was killed in his basement kitchen while cooking sausage and peppers; the assailant or assailants remain unknown.

Giancana led the Chicago Outfit from 1957 to 1966 and was linked in public reports to high-profile figures and to an alleged CIA plot to assassinate Fidel Castro. Investigations into his murder produced multiple theories, including that other mob figures acted because of what he had told or might tell a federal grand jury or that the killing was connected to his alleged dealings with the CIA. No arrests have been announced in connection with the slaying.
