Sixteen-year-old Ivan Wheeler was fatally shot on October 11, 2020, outside the Oakwood Center in Terrytown, a suburb of Gretna, Louisiana. The shooting occurred after a planned meeting in the mall parking lot that escalated into a violent fight and ended with gunfire; a 29-year-old man was also critically injured.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office investigators identified and arrested two suspects in the days after the shooting. Trevon Gibson, 20, and Darrell Douglas, 18, were booked on charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in connection with Wheeler’s death and the injuries to the other man.

A related development: two days after the mall shooting, the burned body of 21-year-old David Frazier was found near train tracks in the Florida neighborhood. The coroner determined Frazier died from multiple gunshot wounds, and investigators believe he was with Gibson and Douglas when they went to meet Wheeler and the other man. Darrell Douglas was also arrested in connection with Frazier’s death.
