A family in Eunice, Louisiana, was torn apart on the evening of September 8, 2020, when 35-year-old Benjamin Hurks was found dead in an apartment in the 800 block of South Beulah Street. Police were called to the residence at about 8 p.m.; Hurks was discovered slumped over a sofa bed with a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene by a representative of the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office. Investigators recovered a .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun in the apartment.

Also in the apartment was Benjamin’s 29-year-old brother, Jonah Gobert, who was found in the same room and was described as crying loudly. The investigation focused on Gobert as the primary suspect. Authorities had already been seeking him for a separate August 23 incident at the same complex, in which he was accused of criminal damage to property, simple assault, and aggravated battery; those allegations included punching a person, threatening them with a gun, and striking a vehicle with a pipe. Gobert was later taken into custody after being treated at hospitals following the September 8 events, and a St. Landry Parish Grand Jury indicted him on second-degree murder charges in November 2020.

Are there details about Benjamin’s last day or the brothers’ relationship that anyone in the Eunice area can share?
