A Father’s Day gathering in Marrero turned deadly on June 21, 2020, when an argument over a parking spot escalated to gunfire and the death of 40-year-old Tyrell Washington Sr. The dispute happened about 10:45 p.m. at a home in the 900 block of North Clark Lane near Westwego while Washington was visiting his mother and stepfather, Mark Jones.
Jefferson Parish deputies say the argument began because Washington had parked in front of a neighbor’s house and escalated into a physical fight. During the altercation, Jones allegedly retrieved a firearm and shot Washington multiple times, and also shot Washington’s 21-year-old son in the neck. Both victims were taken to University Medical Center; Tyrell Washington Sr. died and his son was listed in critical condition. Deputies arrested Mark Jones at the scene and booked him on second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder; bond was set at $750,000. At a later hearing Jones claimed self-defense, while Washington’s mother and sister disputed his account, saying Jones shot Tyrell and then fired a final shot into him as he lay wounded.
Did anyone in the area see what led to the confrontation that night or have information about the sequence of events?
