In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 18, 2019, 19-year-old Saharol Holmes of Thibodaux, Louisiana, was killed by gunfire. Deputies responded about 2:15 a.m. to reports of shots fired in the Abby Subdivision and found a car riddled with bullet holes on the 400 block of Abby Road. Holmes was located in a nearby field with at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another male who had multiple gunshot wounds was found nearby and taken to a hospital in critical condition; he was later reported to be stable. Investigators believed two other men had been in the vehicle and questioned them. At least one home in the area was struck by gunfire but there were no other reported injuries. Authorities described the attack as a targeted ambush and said it was unclear whether Holmes or another occupant was the intended victim.

Holmes had played football at Thibodaux High School. In October 2018 he had been arrested, along with three others, on second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder charges; those charges were later pretermitted for further investigation. Investigators identified at least two persons of interest after the shooting and said the investigation was ongoing; no arrests were publicly announced in the immediate aftermath. If anyone knew Saharol Holmes or has information about the shooting, please come forward.
