Zacchaeus Hakim Burton, a 29-year-old African American man, was found dead on July 17, 2019, at the end of a dead-end road in Dequincy, Louisiana. Teenagers discovered his body; initial identification required DNA confirmation that took several days. Investigators say his body was shot and then set on fire.

The investigation led to arrests of Nathaniel Mitchell III and George Buck. According to testimony from Buck, he, Mitchell and Burton were together the morning of the killing. Buck testified that Mitchell told him he believed Burton intended to harm him and said he was going to do something to stop him. Surveillance video and license plate reader records place the men in the Dequincy area that day, and Mitchell’s ex-wife testified she saw Mitchell with Burton that afternoon. Buck testified he directed the pair to the secluded road where Mitchell shot Burton and then set the body on fire.

Mitchell was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole. An appeal challenging evidence and counsel was rejected and the conviction and sentence were upheld. Does anyone have information about Burton’s movements in Dequincy on July 17, 2019?
