John O’Neil Jason, 22, a Black man from Opelousas, Louisiana, was found dead along the railroad tracks after a gunshot was heard on Statesman Road in the early hours of January 10, 2019. Neighbors reported hearing a single blast that night; police determined Jason sustained a single gunshot wound to the head and tied the shooting to about 2:00 a.m. on Statesman Road.

Investigators focused on a local man, Darrell Young. By late February Young was in custody at the St. Landry Parish Jail after an earlier arrest on January 27, 2019, and was booked on additional charges related to Jason’s death. A St. Landry Parish grand jury returned a true bill on April 29, 2019, indicting Darrell D. Young for second-degree murder; authorities also booked him as a felon in possession of a firearm.
