Stefanie Diane Welch, age 23, disappeared from Lakin, Kansas on February 28, 2001 after dropping her two young sons at preschool and daycare. She was living in a mobile home and reportedly gathering belongings to move in with her boyfriend, Roy Moore. After leaving the younger child at daycare around 9:15 a.m., witnesses believe she returned toward the mobile home but never came back for the children. Moore discovered the toddler hadn’t been picked up at 6:20 p.m. and reported Stefanie missing.
Her silver 1990 Mazda 626, owned by Moore, was found around 11:00 a.m. abandoned in the private driveway of a mobile home park in southeast Lakin. The keys were gone but her jacket and wallet with $500 were on the front seat; the wheel wells were caked with snow and mud. A witness saw an unidentified man in black walking away from the car shortly after it was parked, and investigators believe someone other than Stefanie drove the vehicle there. Extensive searches turned up no trace of her, and the case was reclassified as a probable homicide in February 2002. No arrests have been made.
She is described as 5 feet 8 inches, about 190 pounds, brown hair, blue eyes, tattoos on her back and right breast, scars on her left buttock and right elbow, and a pierced navel. If anyone has information about Stefanie Welch, her movements that morning, or the man seen near the car, please come forward.
