Akoya Skeith was 25 when he was fatally shot in the early hours of December 24, 2017, inside a home on the 200 block of Clemson Place in Kenner, Louisiana. He was taken to University Hospital with a gunshot wound to his abdomen and later died. The Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office autopsy found the bullet entered the lower left abdomen and exited about three inches higher on the right torso, and there were no close-range discharge marks, findings the coroner said were inconsistent with a self-inflicted wound.
His girlfriend, 29-year-old Dominique Wix, initially told police Skeith accidentally shot himself while removing a pistol from his waistband but later admitted she had lied. Wix gave varying accounts, at one point saying Skeith made an aggressive move toward her and she grabbed a handgun and shot him, and at another saying she had been playfully pointing a gun. Wix was arrested and charged with manslaughter; in November 2018 she pleaded guilty to negligent homicide.
Did anyone in the Kenner area know Akoya Skeith or overhear anything that night?
