Chonsie White, a 30-year-old resident of Thibodaux, Louisiana, was fatally shot on Ridgefield Road on Wednesday afternoon, November 15, 2017. Dontrell Bryant Jr., the driver, had White enter the back seat to complete the transaction. While Bryant sat in the front passenger seat, Tremell Batiste produced a handgun and attempted to rob White. During the struggle Batiste shot White multiple times. White exited the vehicle but died at the scene; Batiste and Bryant fled.
Police located Bryant at the Waverly Apartments later that night and arrested him. The next morning, with assistance from the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Department, officers found Batiste and took him into custody after a short foot chase. Both were charged with second-degree murder. Bryant later testified against Batiste at trial. In May 2021 a jury convicted Tremell Batiste of second-degree murder and he was given a mandatory life sentence without probation, parole, or suspension of sentence.
