Jon Kelly Smith, 54, of Lumberton, Mississippi, was shot and killed in Bogalusa, Louisiana, on July 1, 2017. Smith was with an unidentified woman at the time; after the shooting she drove him from the scene back to his home.

A 22-year-old man from Bogalusa named Dakeithan D. Matthews was later identified as a suspect. A Washington Parish grand jury returned an indictment charging Matthews with second-degree murder and armed robbery with a firearm, alleging he fatally shot Smith and used the same handgun in a separate armed robbery that day.

The shooting and the subsequent indictment shocked the local community. If anyone has information about Smith’s last hours in Bogalusa or remembers seeing him with the woman who drove him, please come forward.
