Nineteen-year-old Michael Avara was shot on the evening of June 21, 2017, on Saun Drive in Denham Springs, Louisiana, after an altercation with a group of people. A single gunshot from a vehicle struck Avara in the abdomen; he was taken to a Baton Rouge hospital and died in the early hours of June 22, 2017.

The Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested five people in connection with the shooting. Fredrik L. Dennis, then 25, was identified as the person who fired the weapon and was charged with murder. Devonte Welton, 22, Shelby Compton, 18, Sydney Compton, 21, and an unnamed juvenile were charged with obstruction of justice.

Fredrik L. Dennis later pleaded no contest to negligent homicide and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and was sentenced to 15 years in the 21st Judicial District Court after a plea agreement arrived at with Avara’s family.
