On the afternoon of September 22, 2016, Kendrick Ussin, a 20-year-old Black man from New Orleans and Helen Cox High School graduate, was ambushed in the courtyard of an apartment complex in the 2400 block of Kornman Boulevard in Harvey, Louisiana. At about 1:30 p.m. two people approached and opened fire; Ussin was struck multiple times, taken to a nearby hospital, and died of his wounds.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office investigated the homicide and released a limited description of one suspect: a Black male about 18 to 21 years old, approximately 5 feet 7 inches and 200 pounds. No description was made public for the second suspect. Ussin’s mother, Shawn Hebert, described him as always the energy in the room, smiling and making people laugh, and advocated publicly for information after his death. A reward was offered for tips leading to an arrest, but no arrests have been announced.
Anyone who knew Kendrick, saw activity around the Kornman Boulevard apartments that afternoon, or has information relevant to the case is urged to come forward.
