Derick Stewart, a 24-year-old Black man from Baton Rouge, was shot and killed on March 28, 2016, in Denham Springs, Louisiana. The shooting happened off Pete’s Highway, south of Highway 190, while Stewart and another person were inside a vehicle. After being shot their car hit a parked vehicle, and both occupants tried to run before collapsing. Both were taken to a Baton Rouge hospital; Stewart died and the other victim suffered a leg injury and was expected to survive.

Denham Springs police identified 24-year-old Brian Allen as the suspect and arrested him on charges including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Investigators cited home surveillance footage showing Stewart attempting to drive away, being blocked by Allen’s vehicle, and Allen exiting his car and opening fire. Recorded jail calls were also reported to include Allen discussing an alibi and telling others to remove his fingerprints from the gun and hide it.
