On a late Thursday night in March 2016, 33-year-old Dwayne Stephens was shot and killed outside a Prairieville, Louisiana residence on Lee Stevens Road. Stephens, described as a Black man, was approaching the home when a Lincoln Town Car with three people pulled up. Two men exited—one armed with a handgun and the other with a semi-automatic rifle—and opened fire. Stephens was struck multiple times in the stomach as bullets also pierced the home’s walls.

Inside the house at the time were Stephens’ fiancée, Tamekia Ricks, his 14-year-old son, and Ricks’ 4-year-old son. Ricks said she shielded the children and instructed them to get on the floor while Stephens attempted to enter the door; he told her he had been hit before collapsing. He was taken to a local hospital and died of his injuries.

Investigators identified three suspects: Joshua Stephens, Caleb Carter, and Marcus Harris, and arrest warrants were issued. Two of the suspects were reported to be the victim’s cousins.
