Maurcell Mitchell was 16 when he was killed by gunfire in Harvey, Louisiana, on Sunday, December 7, 2014. Initial information from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office noted a person of interest early in the inquiry but did not identify a motive for the teen’s slaying.

Investigators later identified and arrested a man from nearby Gretna, Carlos Heard, who was charged in connection with Mitchell’s death. The case moved through the courts, and Heard ultimately pleaded guilty to the shotgun killing of Maurcell Mitchell, resolving the prosecution without a full trial.
