In late winter 2014 in Opelousas, Louisiana, five-year-old Jon-Qualon Pitre was struck at point-blank range by a bullet while in his front yard, suffering a catastrophic head wound. First responders placed him on life support but he was declared brain dead and taken off life support on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at a hospital in Baton Rouge; his family donated his organs.Just after the shooting, investigators focused on people who had been in the yard. A seven-year-old child was there with Jon-Qualon, and a 16-year-old who lived in the same home and was identified as the boyfriend of Jon-Qualon’s aunt was questioned and initially cleared.
Forensic evidence later contradicted that teen’s initial statement. The probe led to the arrest of a 16-year-old cousin who admitted bringing the gun and said he and his seven-year-old brother had been playing with it. The district attorney charged the teenager with second-degree murder and illegal carrying of a firearm by a juvenile.
Does anyone have information about Jon-Qualon, the home where he lived, or what happened that day?
